Is Fresh Water a Renewable Resource?
• It depends on the situation. Fresh water could be a renewable resource if humans did not consume it so quickly. • Compared to the total amount of water on the earth, there is a very small amount of fresh water. While it is true that there are natural forces that help to replenish fresh water (like the water cycle) the fact of the matter is that we are using much more fresh water than the earth could possibly replenish. What is Meant by “Renewable”? • Renewable in this case means that the resource will be available for an unmeasureably long period of time. • If humans reduced their overall water consumption enough, fresh water could be considered a renewable resource.
