Is french spoken in Newfoundland, Canada?
There is a small French population in Newfoundland. On the west coast of the island there are a number of communities – in the Port au Port area – where people speak French as their first language, and there are quite a few people who are unilingual French. There is a Francophone school board, and a French school in the larger communities. Remembver too that the French (as in, part of France) islands of St. Pierre and Miquleon are just off the Newfoundland south coast, and there is a daily ferry service. There is a strong connection between these islands and Newfoundland. There is a strong French heritage in Newfoundland, even though most of the langauge has been lost except for the Port au Port area.
