Answer I understand Ron did study a number of secret societies and read some of Aleister Crowley’s output. He found them to be dead ends. OTO is not a branch of freemasonry but Crowleys’ bastardization of some of their ceremonies with a bunch of his own stuff thrown in. There is no similarity between Freemasonry and any part of Scientology. There is no similarity between magic, black magic, or in Crowley’s terms, “Magick” and any part of Scientology. If by “occult,” you mean “hidden,” (the literal meaning of the word) then by definition the fact that we have some confidential materials which are only made available to those who are ready for them, this is something many would refer to as “occult.” That is not to say that things normally associated with that word, such as secret ceremonies, use of mediums or clairvoyants, “spooky” stuff, communing with the dead, Ouija boards or any of that kind of thing are found anywhere in Scientology.
