France has decided to open up their online gambling market to allow foreign online gambling firms to operate within their country. Before this the government had a monopoly of the internet gaming industry but after numerous warnings and threat of court action from the European Union they have decided to change legislation. Over the next 18 months the government will gradually let non-state online gambling firms operate within France. The new legislation is hoping to be approved for the beginning of next year. It is said that this legislation will claim that the state will still have control over slot machines and online operators will receive 5 year licenses to accept bets from French residents on sports events and poker.
