Beginning Nov. 2, basic will be extended one week — to a total of 10 — in a pilot program at the five posts where basic training is conducted. The increase marks the first change in length since 1998, when basic training grew from eight weeks to the current nine. The pilot will run through mid-March, and beginning in October 2008 after the summer basic training surge, the Army will institute 10-week basic training for good, going back to the nine-week program until then. The training regimen will not be expanded, Army training leaders say. Rather, the added week will give drill sergeants some discretionary time to work their charges in areas they think still need work.
