Yes, provided that sufficient progress has been made. A number of professional associations provide dissertation fellowships for students in their fifth year. We often provide dissertation fellowships for students in their fifth year who have applied for an outside fellowship and have defended a dissertation proposal by the time decisions are made at the end of the fourth year. Some departments also hire students who are completing their dissertations as instructors.
