Is fermentation or photosynthesis the best way to grow algae for biofuels?

Both are good methods and have their respective pros and cons. Fermentation can be more controlled but could get costly. Photosynthesis is virtually free with respect to an energy source (i.e. the sun). Different species of algae can absorb different and more wavelengths of light which would aid photosynthesis over fermentation.
