Dependent students may borrow a total of $7,500 (subsidized and/or unsubsidized) through the Federal Stafford Loan Program. Independent students* are eligible to borrow a total of $12,500 through the Federal Stafford Loan Program. Postbac Premed students can only receive a Stafford loan for a two-semester period (one year) per federal regulations. *For Federal financial aid purposes, students who are considered “independent” must be at least 24 years of age, or married, or an orphan, or a ward of the court, or a veteran of the U. S. Armed Forces. As of July 1, 2008, the interest rate is between 6% and 6.8%. No interest is charged on subsidized Stafford loans while you are enrolled at least half-time and no payments are due on either subsidized or unsubsidi
