Is farmland somehow taxed differently?
Land that is designated as agricultural land is valued differently than residential or business property. The State of Wisconsin sets a value per acre amount for all land that is designated as agricultural. All agricultural land in Jefferson County would have the same per acre value as set by the State. Assessors apply the per acre value to each property in order to determine the property value of the parcel. The value per acre is substantially less than the market value of the property. This valuation system for farmland was phased in beginning in 1997.
