For most trees a good rule of thumb to follow is do not prune when the leaves are coming or going. In addition, many disease spores are present in autumn and can easily enter pruning cuts. (One exception is the flowering dogwood. Because of the problem with anthracnose which is present in the spring, dogwoods should be pruned in the fall).
