Is Fair Trade An Effective Tool For Economic Repression; In A Poverished Community?
Fair Trade is an excellent option to not only help people in empoverish countries make a living but actually help them maintain their traditions and stay close to their families. If you study most developing countries, a large part of their population works in agriculture or traditional activities for women (sewing, weaving, embroidering, pottery, etc). If you decide to support fair trade you are giving them work that allows them to make ends meet and so they can support and stay with their families. When peasants and farmers are forced to sell their crops, crafts at ridiculous prices because of international pressure (US and EU subsidies, Walmart, etc) they have nothing else to do but move to the cities trying to find a better life for them (the countryside in 3rd world countries have literally nothing but fields). In the capital, they have no skills to find a decent job and so they end up in a terrible poverty from which they can’t escape (nor their kids since they probably could not
