Is expanding Sellafield good news for Cumbria?
Cumbria County Council’s leader is not averse to the principle… although there are reservations. It seems everyone has an opinion about the prospect of a new reactor at Sellafield. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has announced its nominations for sites which could house a new generation of nuclear power stations. No one was surprised to see Sellafield on the list, along with Wylfa on Anglesey, Oldbury in Gloucestershire and Bradwell in Essex. Approval, or otherwise, from the relevant local authorities is expected soon. Many Cumbrians, accustomed to more than half a century of nuclear-powered financial security, would like to see Sellafield have a new reactor; maybe even two. The government seems equally enthusiastic.
