Agreed, you need a spacial underwater case. (The underwater setting will merely alter focus range, aperture and colour balance, etc., to take the best pics once it’s in a waterproof housing.) Only a few good compacts like the Olympus 1030SW can actually be taken underwater without a special case. Quite a few more are weather-proof, but that doesn’t mean you can immerse them safely.
