The question of how the method of breastfeeding impacts transmission of HIV from mothers to children was examined in a prospective study undertaken by researchers at the University of Natal in Durban, South Africa [abstract LbOr6]. Anna Coutsoudis (University of Natal) said, “The risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV through breastfeeding has not previously been examined in the light of the pattern of breastfeeding. We took a look at what type of breastfeeding is taking place among these mothers.” In particular, Coutsoudis said, the researchers differentiated between children who were exclusively breastfed and those who received both breast milk and formula (a practice referred to as “mixed breastfeeding”).
