How do you “know” that the sword in the stone is Uther’s old sword? That’s not stated in any medieval source. That was probably an invention of John Boorman in his film “Excalibur”. Or maybe Boorman borrowed this invention from some earlier author of an Arthurian novel, though I can’t recall such a novel. White in his “The Once and Future King” in general follows Sir Thomas Malory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur” but he does not specifically adapt the sections from Malory where Arthur pulls the sword from the lake or the section where Arthur learns its name. I suspect, had he done so, like most modern adapters of Malory, he would have accepted the Lady of the Lake version of Excalibur’s origin and ignored Malory’s
