Is ethanol the culprit behind high food prices?
No. While ethanol subsidies in America do benefit farmers who choose to grow crops for its production, only a microscopic portion of the increase in food prices has been attributed to the conversion of crops to corn ethanol, and only in some studies. This is easily outweighed by the amount of money consumers and the food industry have saved because of the ethanol that is currently blended into our nation’s gasoline, keeping prices at the pump lower by about 29-40 cents per gallon.
