Is English widely used in Germany?
Most people do speak English, some fluently, some are only capable of basic conversation. Some older people especially in East Germany/East Berlin might not be able to speak English, ’cause they learned Russian in school (and choose French, not English as their second foreign language). Some people might tell you, they don’t speak English or “just a little bit”, because they think it to be embarrassing to not speak it perfectly (perfectionism is a great value in Germany…haha), but you’ll be surprised how good their English actually is when they are “forced” to use it. Generally, you won’t need any German when traveling through Germany, but if plan to stay and work there for some longer period, you will have to learn the language.
