Is educated, trained, and licensed conforming to the ethical and legal standards of his or her profession?
These qualities do not guarantee high quality of service but they do set minimum standards for a therapist. It is important to work with a therapist whose qualifications you understand and respect. You are entitled to, and you should make, an unhurried examination of a prospective therapist’s academic degrees and state licenses. These documents should be in plain view somewhere in the therapist’s office. All other things being equal (and they never are!), the more academically and developmentally appropriate a prospective therapist’s credentials, the better.
