Well, you have to think about the optimal conditions of certain plants. Do you know what types of plants you are getting? There are some eclipse systems that have optimal lighting for at least low light plants. Any type of gravel is fine. Sand should be avoided (it wont hold rooted plants down), but can be a top layer on gravel. For lighting conditions, look to see if you have about 2 watts per gallon (find the total wattage of the light and divide it by the number of gallons the tank is) at least for optimal low light-medium conditions. If you are new to plants or want easy maintenance plants, try getting plants like java moss, java ferns, anubias and wisteria. I have great experiences with these at 2watts/gallon tanks.
