Is eccentric dress a distraction or free expression?
Eccentric dress — unusual, deviant or freakish — is a common lifestyle choice of many young Americans. From neon-colored hair to crazy patterns on clothing, uniqueness in physical appearance has become an everyday thing for them. Over the past 40 years, American culture has experienced everything from the hippie era of tie-dye and large afros to the skulls and bones of the grunge era. Though the clothing and hair styles may have changed from decade to decade, there was one thing that did not: The reason behind the young people’s unusual dress. One reason is that junior high and high school are very difficult times for many young people. Between their desires to find their place in life among their often-condescending peers and their attempts to slowly break away from the protective hold which their parents have on them, teenagers find that through their own dress, they are able to express themselves and their opinions comfortably.
