Is Earth Hour an energy conservation event?
No. Earth Hour isn’t about how much energy is saved during one hour. The idea behind Earth Hour is that by working together, each one of us can make a difference on the issue of climate change. Is turning off the lights dangerous? What about criminals? Earth Hour turns off non-essential lighting only. Lights necessary for public safety including street lights, safety lights in public spaces, lights for aviation guidance, traffic lights, security lights and hospital lights will not go out. WWF is working with local governments, fire and police departments, and local power companies to make sure Earth Hour is 100% safe. Will my city go completely black? Earth Hour is not a black out. It is a voluntary power down of non-essential, decorative lighting by its participants.
