Is drink spiking a big issue In Australia?
Ask a person in the street…Almost every person will know or know of somebody who’s had their drink spiked. Knowledge about drink spiking in Australia is currently very limited but suggestions that incidents of drink spiking have been increasing in recent times has resulted in a need to greatly improve the knowledge base on drink spiking. We live in a culture where alcohol is viewed as a fun, bonding experience and because of this mindset, people appear to be less likely to seriously think about the consequences of drink spiking in Australia. An Australian study conducted by CASA House has indicated that as many as 40% of women believe that they have had a drink spiked in the past, or that an attempt has been made to spike their drink. Similar figures are reported in the UK, with a Guardian survey finding that at least one in four women believe their drink has been spiked (Guardian, Sep 9, 2004).
