Is draining necessary for the worm bins?

While not absolutely essential, it is recommended, and necessary if you’re finding that you constantly have problems with excess water. For those making their own vermicomposter, all you need to do is drill holes on the bottom (to prevent escaping worms, you should cover the drainage holes with some sort of screen, such as mesh or sheer fabric), elevate the bin on 1-2 inch blocks, and set up a tray underneath. The drained water should NOT be tossed out, since the drained water is an excellent natural fertilizer for plants, and can even help revive dying plants! All you do is collect the “compost tea” or “worm tea”, dilute it with a bit of water, and your plants will absolutely adore you for it.
