Is digital mammography more accurate in detecting cancer?
For women under 50 years old, women with dense breasts, and women who are pre- and peri-menopausal, digital mammograms are significantly more accurate in detecting cancer, the NEJM study shows. Digital mammography allows for better visibility of the breast, particularly near the skin line, chest wall and in women with dense breast tissue, according to General Electric Co., which provided digital mammogram technology for the study. Radiologists are able to manipulate and magnify images, better illuminating some areas, and creating sharper contrast. This is especially important in women with dense breasts, where the tissue often masks cancerous lesions.
