Is dense breast tissue like a blank wall for mammograms?
Yes. The breast tissue of pre-menopausal women is typically quite dense. The x-ray used by mammograms has a very difficult time seeing through this dense, fibrous tissue. This is the major argument for not performing routine screening mammograms on pre-menopausal women. The research that has been done shows no benefit from mammography for pre-menopausal women under age 50.
