Is Cultural Assimilation Possible?
To the cultural criminologist, ‘this bulimia of late modernity’ is inimical in understanding just why crime and racism occurs in increasing rates amongst, and towards immigrants. As the media continue to conjecture so society becomes more closed to the definition of its ‘culture’. This inevitably means that it becomes easier to demonize and criminalize immigrants. Young points to an ‘us’ and ‘them’ mentality with many pressing issues in society, such as the ‘dwindling of culture’ and the increase in crime, being sold as foreign problems versus national values. Cultural criminologists strive to deliver an understanding of how black and ethnic minority immigrants have come to be constructed within for example, British and American society today. The effects of late modernity on the marginalization and criminalizing of immigrants is also given significant importance in cultural criminological studies.
