Is correct spelling and punctuation important nowadays?

I think it is very important.My 11 year old son is a terrible speller.Cannot write one sentence without multiple misspellings.His last report card of the last school year (4th grade) had an “A” in spelling.Terrible.Grade schools do not allow enough time for spelling.When I would ask about spelling the teacher said it does not matter they can use Spell Check.Needless to say middle school teachers do not agree but by that time it’s a little late to correct.
