Is Cooler Skies Company a non-profit initiative?
No. We thought long and hard about this, as many social ventures do. But ultimately we decided that in order to move global warming mitigation needs action beyond a “purely philanthropic exercise”, the best model would be the “For-Profit” model. Cooler Skies Company’s goal is to achieve real greenhouse gas emission reductions. In addition, non-profit retailers often focus on only one kind of offset that is consistent with their particular organizational mission. Projects, such as reforestation, may simply reflect projects already funded by the organization for other purposes. This can also lead to situations where the quality of the offsets or reductions is lower or not verifiable. The bottom line is that the tax-status of a provider of offsets is not an indicator of quality. As a social venture, our profits are reinvested to achieve our goal: reducing greenhouse gas emissions and prevent the planet from heating up any more than it is now and prevent “climate chaos”.
