Is continued stocking of kokanee at Granby a bad strategy?
Past stocking rates of kokanee at Granby have been nearly double what they are now. Managing kokanee and lake trout at Granby (and many other CO reservoirs) is complicated by the presence of the exotic mysis shrimp. During the 1990’s water conditions in Granby have favored mysis, which depleted the zooplankton- the kokanee’s primary food source. The kokanee stocking rate at Granby will remain lower until the kokanee food supply rebounds. If kokanee could be recovered in Granby andit produced only half or slightly less than it’s historic number of eggs annually, that amount might still exceed the egg production of any otherpotential egg source in the state.
