Is consumption of aspartame harmful during pregnancy? What about caffeine?

I had gestational diabetes with one of my pregnancies. I had to go to classes and meet with a dietitian during my pregnancy. The recommendation at the classes and confirmed with my OB and the dietitian is that artificial sweeteners are safe during pregnancy. When I researched it further, I couldn’t find any studies that artificial sweeteners caused any problems for babies – no birth defects or other harmful effects. As far as caffeine, my OB lets me have caffeine when I get headaches. If you drink 5 or cups of coffee a day, it is linked to miscarriage. I think an occasional cup of tea is fine. Here’s a link from March of Dimes.
