Is compressed natural gas a good alternative for gasoline in price and the green effect?
Compressed natural gas releases about 23% less carbon dioxide than gasoline, for the same amount of energy. In general, the less dense a fuel, the less the carbon dioxide. There is more to being ‘green’ than just worrying about global warming. Arguably, urban air quality is more important in terms of immediately health impact. There is no doubt that natural gas is vastly cleaner than gasoline or diesel fuel. Cheaper. That depends. If we were to make a major shift toward replacing much of our gasoline consumption with compressed natural gas, it would be extremely expensive because of the changes in infrastructure that would be required.
