Is Compensation valid in a Learning Outcomes Model?
It has already been argued that compensation at module level is inappropriate. However, at Stage or Programme level, it may well be justified, when considering a students overall profile. EDEXCEL regulations state for BTEC programmes that a pass is awarded for the achievement of all outcomes against the specified assessment criteria. Outcomes typically number 2 to 4 with 3 to 5 assessment criteria for each outcome. A Higher National Diploma programme comprises 16 modules and therefore typically a total of 192 criteria have to be met during the duration of the programme. There are two issues, firstly, are there too many outcomes, and secondly is it necessary to achieve all of them?
