Is Colombia Dangerous?
Again, a good question that always comes up. Most people ask this question because they remember all the violence and destruction caused by the drug wars of the mid 80’s to early 90’s. At that time Colombia was certainly a dangerous place for a foreigner to visit. Since that time much has changed, the drug cartels exist but have been confined to the rural countryside mainly in the south, and the cities have been fortified and restored to civil, peaceful, productive areas. There are areas with high unemployment and limited opportunities for the the people who live, and there is bound to be some crime just as we see in our own inner cities and impoverished areas, but these are not the areas in which you will be visiting and staying. You will be in the north of Bogota which is a wealthy and secure area, rich in culture, nightlife, shopping, and entertainment.
