Is coach Lovie Smith about to be canned by the Chicago Bears?
LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith wants to see defensive tackle Tommie Harris practicing more often before he puts the Pro Bowler into a game. Smith said he held Harris out of the lineup for the 45-10 loss at Cincinnati because Harris did not practice during the week due to knee soreness. Harris disputed that being the reasoning, and Smith confirmed Monday it was his decision to sit Harris. “Tommie didn’t play this week; it was more a coach’s decision as much as anything,” Smith said. “He has had some soreness. He didn’t practice all week. I thought we had better options.” ESPNChicago.com Bears blog The latest news from Bears beat reporter Jeff Dickerson. Blog The goal, Smith said, was to rest Harris so he would be healthy enough to practice in the upcoming week and play against Cleveland. “Could Tommie have played if I wanted him to? Yes,” Smith said. “But I thought we could get a better Tommie if we let him rest t
After the Bears were taken apart, limb by limb, by the Cincinnati Bengals, we started hearing some familiar cries from the fanbase. I don’t know how to explain the fact that the Bears had two weeks to prepare for the Falcons, only to come out unprepared and sloppy. I also don’t know how to explain the fact that just one week later, Coach Smith sat in front of the cameras and said he didn’t have the team ready to play the Bengals. But, David Haugh takes time to address the coaching situation, and says that Lovie is not going anywhere, if for no reason other than economics. Star-divide As a public service to save the next fed-up Bears fan from picking up the phone or clicking “Send,” please remember that Lovie Smith has two years and about $11 million left on his contract after this season. So unless Virginia McCaskey adopts Daniel Snyder into the family, the Bears aren’t likely to pay Smith a fortune to go away and open the vault for a $6 million-a-year replacement such as Bill Cowher o
There is apparently a loud cry going up in the Windy City by fans of the Chicago Bears. It basically consists of one unified idea: fire coach Lovie Smith. The team, however, has no plans to fire Smith, according to the paper. He has two more years and about $11 million left on his contract and Bears owner Virginia McCaskey cannot afford to be paying Smith to not do a job while simultaneously paying someone else $6 million to do the job Smith was supposed to do. So feel free to exercise your First Amendment rights, Bears fans, but don’t expect anything to change for a few years.
