Is Clotrimazole pessary safe during pregnancy?
Ok, I have never heard of the pessary part and am not sure what that word even means, BUT I have used Clotrimazole many times to treat yeast infections a few times during my 3 pregnancies. It’s been prescribed for me by 3 different OB’s at 3 different practices and I’ve had no side affects or problems using it. Good luck.
I too think that you should consult your doctor for the correct information however i searched the web and found something that may help you: The Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC) for canesten vaginal pessary (1) notes in the section on pregnancy and lactation: “In animal studies clotrimazole has not been associated with teratogenic effects but following oral administration of high doses to rats there was evidence of foetotoxicity. The relevance of this effect to topical application in humans is not known. However, clotrimazole has been used in pregnant patients for over a decade without attributable adverse effects. It is, therefore, recommended that clotrimazole should be used in pregnancy only when considered necessary by the clinician. During pregnancy extra care should be taken when using the applicator to prevent the possibility of mechanical trauma”. You can check this link for more information: www.attract.wales.nhs.
