IS CLASSICISM DEAD AND BURIED IN THE SAND OF TIME?
This is a gimmicky, fun, interactive, site specific work. The irony of the gimmick is that while it is a fun, light hearted work, it seriously questions why gimmickry is sometimes considered a necessity in the art world of today? It asks the question. Why in the art world today is Classicism most decidedly dead and buried? By Classicism we usually mean art which is balanced, harmonious, idealized, and above all, beautiful. Pure Classicism has gone in and out of fashion through the ages, yet one aspect, the primacy of beauty in art, endured through all the fluctuations of style, almost to the present. The Athenians started it all. For we are lovers of the beautiful, they said. This love of beauty continued down through the ages, even when the other characteristics of Classicism like serenity and idealisation were rejected.
