Is Cinema Studies like Siskel and Ebert?
Yes and no. Like movie reviewers in popular culture, cinema studies is interested in the evaluation of film. Unlike movie reviewers, however, these courses do not confine themselves to whether the film is good ornot, or gripping or not. These courses analyze the visual, narrative, argumentative, and ideological structures of cinema as both an art formand as a form of consumer culture. In other words, they take the passion of people like Siskel an Ebert and torque it up to a higher level, combining literary theory, linguistics, music, philosophy, historiography, visual studies and cultural studies. Each of our courses is taught with adifferent methodology and with a different set of films.
