He didn’t personally kill large numbers, but he is responsible in several indirect ways: he introduced European diseases to which they had no protection, resulting in many deaths, and he established the precedent of treating the native peoples as though they had no rights and were to be regarded as a source of unpaid labor who had to feed and enrich the Europeans.
