There are many great stores and restaurants in San Fran Chinatown, just ask the locals for their advice. We ate at Great Eastern in Chinatown which had the BEST dim sum I have ever eaten and went a couple of miles further and ate ate House of Bejing on Clement Street which was also excellent for chinese food and dim sum. A word of caution: stay away from the restaurants and stores directly on the block that begins inside the chinatown gates. They are tourist rip offs. You need to go at least about five blocks up and over to find authentic Chinese food, shopping and delicacies. Ask the locals, they will tell you where to go. Have fun, it’s a great spot to visit!

San Francisco’s Chinatown is special because it’s so concentrated and the streets are very narrow. Some of the neatest things can be seen and heard, the constant clatter of mah jong tiles being scrambled, the roar of a drum beat of a martial arts dance troupe practicing, the smell of fortune cookies being made…etc. Years ago, the police cracked down on fake handbags, weapons, and other illegal items. Since then, it has been harder to buy things like switchblades, butterfly knives, and knock off designer stuffs.
