Is cervical cancer ONLY caused by HPV?
Most all abnormal cell changes are due to HPV. Our Pap smear looks for pre-cancer cell changes….and an HPV test confirms these cell changes are due to high risk HPV types. The Pap smear and the HPV test are done from the same sample your doctor takes of your cervix. An HPV test usually follows a positive pap that found abnormal cells….some doctors do not test for HPV because most all abnormal cell changes are due to HPV. Most probably you have HPV. Follow up Pap not showing abnormal cell changes indicate that the abnormal cells have been removed and your body has developed a defense against the virus. Gardasil is to prevent HPV types you have not acquire….it is not a treatment.
