Is cervarix helps in preventing genital warts?
Short answer: no. More correct answer: kinda, maybe. Gardasil protects against 4 strains of HPV: 2 that cause 70% of cervical cancer, and 2 that cause 90% of genital warts. Cervarix only protects against the 2 strains of HPV that cause 70% of cervical cancer. However, there is some data to show that both of these vaccines provide some protection against strains not covered by the vaccine. They provide 100% protection against the vaccine strains but some limited protection (20-60%) protection against other strains. It’s like when you’ve had the flu a whole bunch of times, you have a built-in immunity for it, and thus are less likely to be affected by it in the future. Same thing with herpes. Having HSV-1 actually reduces your chances of getting HSV-2. So basically cervarix gives you some protection against other HPV types because in theory your body is already practiced in fighting off HPV.
