Is Cell Phone Technology Changing the Workplace Environment?
For decades the script for the average workday could be summarized as: wake up, head to the office, clock in, work, clock out, go home, then do the same thing the next day. Simplistic in view and nature, however, the script is changing thanks to advances in cell phone technology. After computers, the single largest contributor to changes in the workplace environment would have to be cell phones. Cell phones have contributed to the creation of a mobile workforce. How rare is it for an employer to not reach an employee at any time of the day or night? It is almost unheard of! Not only are employees accessible, but they are able to contribute and participate when not in the office. This is a large change over the workday script of the past. Along with advances in cell phone technology there are applications which contribute to employee effectiveness. Smartphone apps, while not only creating a separate industry for those with the skills to develop new applications, are pushing the envelope
