Canned pet food is made up of 70 to 80 percent water, ensuring that cats get enough water in their diet. However, wet cat food can not be left out for a cat to snack on throughout the day. Dry Cat Food The Cornell Feline Health Center explains that dry food is acceptable for cats as long is it is nutritionally balanced. Dry food has the advantage of staying fresh longer, and can be left out for a cat to eat throughout the day. Bottom Line Pet Education explains that more research is needed to determine which type of cat food is better. Quality canned and dry food both meet a cat’s nutritional needs when fed with access to fresh water.
