Anybody requiring cardiopulmonary bypass is considered to have open-heart surgery. This is when a heart lung machine is used to take over the activities for you heart and lungs so that you heart may be resting while undergoing surgery. Valve surgery always requires the heart-lung machine and would also be considered open heart surgery.
