Does President Bush care that he is a major factor in our failing economy? Two years ago my husband decided to apply for the Navy’s dental hygiene program. Upon his acceptance, he was informed that he would be promoted to the next rank and would receive a 4.5% reenlistment bonus for completing the program. Less than two months from graduation he was informed that he would not receive the bonus due to budget cuts. For attending a two-year school, the Navy requires a four-year pay back. He’s stuck. The bonus was to be in an amount of about $43,000 to be distributed over the course of the six years for which he was planning to reenlist. According to salary.com the average pay for a civilian dental hygienist is $62,791. The annual salary a dental hygienist can expect to make as an E-5 with six service years in the Navy is a measly $33,000.
