Is building a web server a better long term solution than having a site hosted?

My organization is considering building a comprehensive information site that will include video, blogs, social networking, etc. and we are wondering if having such a content heavy site is worth hosting on our own servers or allowing another company host the site. We currently do not have the technology in house to host, so insight on what we should look for is welcomed too.
