This is a good question, and I generally agree with your reasoning. More fundamentally, though, I think ALL Americans who agree on the importance of the Bill of Rights should be able to agree that the Muslim group has a “right” to build their building where they propose to put it. Whether or not we like Islam, whether or not we blame “Islam” in general for the terrorism of 9-11 (I don’t), ALL American patriots should be able to agree that the government should not interfere with the building of this “religious” or allegedly religious structure — because of respect for the U.S. Constitution and freedom of religion in the USA. I realize there doesn’t seem to be freedom of religion in Saudi Arabia & several other Muslim societies. I understand why many non-Muslims resent this bitterly. But in this country — in MY country — I expect the government to avoid regulating the practice of religion, except when people in the name of religion are violating civil or criminal laws.
