Acting baseball Commissioner Allan H. “Bud” Selig may soon lose the “acting” part of his title. On July 23, Selig refused to rule out the possibility that he would become the game’s permanent leader. Meanwhile, his new No. 2 called Selig the best candidate for the top job. “I’d be thrilled if Buddy would take the job,” said Paul M. Beeston, who will soon leave his post as chief executive of the Toronto Blue Jays and become Major League Baseball’s chief operating officer. Beeston and Selig are close friends, and many baseball observers see Beeston’s appointment as a sign that Selig wants to stay on as the big dog. Selig, who owns the Milwaukee Brewers, took over as acting commissioner when his fellow team owners forced out Fay Vincent in 1992.
