Is Broadway considered “Street” or “Avenue”?”
The famous Broadway, in Manahattan, is neither a street nor and avenue. It runs at an angle, and so it was called Broad Way, later Broadway. In Denver, Broadway runs with the Streets, but it is just called Broadway. In Seattle, Broadway runs with the Avenues, but is just called Broadway. Other cities have Broadway Avenues and Broadway Streets. In general, as this former pizza delivery driver can attest, Streets and Avenues run perpendicular to each other (often lined up with the compass points of north, south, east, and west), and they call something a Way when it is not at right angles to the metropolitan grid. They also use Way when they build more densely than the original plan and they have to duplicate or triplicate the street names.
