Is brick made from sandstone?

0

Bricks aren’t made from sandstone, sandstone is in fact a by-product which is found when sand is excavated from sandpits, the actual sand is what is needed to make bricks. Brick companys will often sell the sandstone to landscapers etc. Although sand is used in brick manufacture, clay is the dominant material used, approx. 70-75 per cent clay, 25-30 per cent sand. These materials are mixed together with water to make a “mud”, (there may be small quantities of other materials, lime for instance) and either cut to size from slabs or pressed into a mould. 900-1000 degrees centigrade is a common temperature that they are “fired” at to make them hard/strong.
